AI Learning Resources

As someone who is in a leadership position in software development, I need to be ahead of the curve and help guide the developers and also inform the business. I am going to be posting a bit more frequently as I collect important “ah ha” moments and other critical learning resources.

Yeah - It's been a while Due to a busy life (two young kids etc), I have been very slack on the blog posting front. This AI learning excerise is a great excuse to finally get back to writing something

Hello ! I am still alive in 2026

Worth a Read

Today, I came across some excellent information from Cisco about “the Journey”. This really is a great resource for coming upto speed on where AI assisted software development is at.

The Journey: Four Eras of AI-Assisted Coding

I don’t personally associate Cisco with “AI best practices” - but it looks like they have some pretty good open source content that they are producing.

and some interesting blog posts at https://blogs.cisco.com/ai

There is quite a strong security focus which is going to be critical when using agentic agents.

The Journey - Four Eras

Reading the above PDF, I can safely say that I am very much in the “Stone Age” of AI development at the moment. I am very used to autocomplete just getting a powerful upgrade and me very much in the drivers seat still.

One thing that jumps out to me - if the rate of software development is going to go up… then we are going to need a significant order of magnitude jump in the rest of the SDLC. The Code Reviews are going to be horrible if we don’t have really good and semi enforced “best practices” upstream (at the point of development).

I am going to need to write some really clear and concise guidelines on what is and what is not acceptable.

Maybe this should be my next focus.

Signing off for now.

One of the key reasons I stop blogging was that there was too much friction and I would take too long to write. I am going to try and write shorter and rougher posts and just live with the downsides.

I will also be writing this my self by hand (yeah ok keyboard). I think it is more important than ever for real humans to still have voices.

Let’s start this journey and make sure we like the destination!
